Rio has a population of about 6.5 million. It was founded in 1565 and was capital of Brazil from 1763 to 1960. The city developed as a port city. The previous capital was Salvador and the capital since 1960 has been Brasilia. Copacabana Beach from Sugar Loaf. Sugar Loaf is a distinctive mound of rock
rising some 1,300' above sea level right in Rio. Copacabana Beach is generally 100+ yards wide and about 2 1/2 miles long. Statue of Christ, Corcovado, built some 2,300' above sea level in the heart of Rio.
Built in 1931, the statue is 125' high and weighs some 1145 tons Copacabana on New Years Eve 1997. The Brazilians dress in white and go to
the beach to celebrate the new year. It is a phenomenal fireworks show with an
audience of 2+ million people.
